Amazing Love
Marinette Uy
Last weekend, I had a grand time watching the latest Disney-Pixar film entitled Finding Nemo. This animated movie is centered on the life of Marlin, a clownfish, and his son, Nemo. Marlin is an overprotective dad, whose fears and anxieties were deeply rooted from a past traumatic event, and Nemo dislikes him for being such, to the point of disobeying his father, resulting to his being "fish-napped" by a group of sea divers. Marlin never gave up on searching for his son, bravely facing the life-threatening perils and obstacles of the deep ocean. Meanwhile, Nemo was also having his own little adventure with his newfound friends in the fish tank somewhere in a dental clinic facing the Sydney harbor. Upon learning about his father's never-say-die quest for his son, Nemo's spirits lit up, and became so determined to be with his father again.
Marlin's staunch determination to look for his son struck me so much, and this made me reflect and marvel at such great love of parents for their children. I believe all parents are like that, they'd be willing to face all challenges and bear all hardships if they need to, all for the love of their children. Our parents may not be the perfect parents, and oftentimes, we may tend to criticize or even judge them, but let me assure you that the love that they have for us is just so great. I remember a beautiful line from a Chinese poem that goes "Fu Mu En Qing Hai Yang Shen" (our parents' love is as deep as the ocean). And no matter how disobedient or insensitive we are, our parents will never give up on us.
Perhaps we may wonder and ask ourselves, why such great love and commitment? All these point to our Creator, our God, who is Love Himself. To begin with, God created us out of love. If our earthly parents love us so much, how much more our Heavenly Father, who has sent His only Son to save us? The beautiful parables I've read and heard before about the Prodigal Son (Lk. 15:11-32), the Lost Sheep (Lk. 15:4-6), the Lost Coin (Lk. 15:8-10)...all these even made more sense to me now. No matter how many times we turn away from Him, no matter how stubborn we are, our God will always be there, patiently waiting for our return, never giving up on us, never losing hope. Eagerly looking forward for that moment when we will be in His loving arms, reunited with Him, and hear Him say, "Everything's ok now, daddy's here."
