The Woman Who Willed A Miracle
Phoebe Mae Hui
Together, my classmates and I watched this film for a paper to be written in our Religion class. This film is wonderful and very moving. After watching this film, I just can't help but be very thankful to the wonderful blessings that God has given me. This film is based on a true story. Read on and see for yourself...
The story is basically about a retarded child, Leslie, who was adopted by and old couple. Joe and May, being childless, loved him dearly even though he was blind. After 10 longing years, Leslie still couldn't speak, eat and can't even sit and stand. He spends the whole day lying in bed doing nothing. And everyday, the couple takes good care of him. They treated him as if he is their very own. The doctor checks up on him every now and then. He said that there have been no improvements and requested that he was to bought to an institute where they specialize on retarded patients. But May refused because she strongly believe that Leslie can still make it. She has strong faith and never did lose hope. Not giving, May sacrificed a lot. Time came and Leslie can finally walk, stand on his own, thanks to the help of May and Joe. He now can play the piano and sing well. Never expressive but now, he shows his emotions as if speaking out his mind. May was very happy and, of course, she wouldn't be able to survive without the unending support of Joe.
I admire May because she is strong willed. She never gives up on something she really wants to achieve. She fights hard for it. She has strong faith in God and she always, never forgets to thank God when something good happens. That made her my favorite character. I myself wouldn't have stood it- under the tremendous heat of the sun, walking with the weight of a child clinging on my back, just to let him learn to walk. And she does that /everyday. /I don't quite like their neighbor. She is so discouraging. Saying Leslie wouldn't be able to get well, shaking her head when she sees May suffering just for Leslie.
Does the title fit the film? Yes, the title fits the film. Leslie, from only hearing all the sounds of the piano and listening to May sing, suddenly knows to play the piano. And so well too! That is a miracle. He never had any practice on the piano or on his voice and the first time he played and sang, it was like he was doing it for years!. How can he easily know which keys to play? How to sing properly? The high notes and low? Wow, for him to easily developed a talent. Well, as they say, there can be miracles when you believe. :)
This had taught me many things. We should never ever lose our faith in God. He never fails to help us in times of need. For every problem, there is always a bright new day waiting for us to make things right again. Do not lose hope in anything we do. Also, when a person is retarded, it doesn't mean that he/she can't do anything. They also have talents. They also have hearts. They are also people like us. We shouldn't look down to them or tease them. We should treat them with respect.
