Parish Pastoral Council Meeting - 12 May 2002
John Oliver Tanbonliong
1. Evaluation of MFCPLA May Pilgrimage to Antipolo
The MFCPLA May pilgrimage to Antipolo was held last May 5, 2002. Binondo parish hosted this year's pilgrimage. Bro. Lawrence reported that this year's pilgrimage was more organized. It was well attended, especially by members of the Binondo parish who came in two buses. Sis. Paz Isip was recognized for her efforts in taking charge of the bus used by our parish for the pilgrimage.
2. Church Renovation Report
The Committee on Church Renovation met last May 5, 2002 and agreed on the following points:
- The lotus design will be used in the sanctuary of the church. Although the lotus is a religious symbol used by Buddhists, its use is by no means limited to the Buddhist faith.
- The candelaria will be placed at the end of the parish annex building. A pedestrian gate may be designed to allow easier access to the candelaria.
- The deep well near the parish annex building will be checked to see if it can still be used. If the deep well can no longer be used, it will be torn down and sealed up.
- A finance committee has been formed to oversee the collection, safeguarding, and disbursement of funds for the renovation of the parish. The finance committee is composed of Fr. Pol Jaucian, Bro. Lawrence See, Bro. Alex Pesengco, Sis. Loretta Chua, and Bro. Danny de Leon. Sis. Loretta Chua has been asked to open an account in a bank conveniently located for her, subject to the approval by the PPC. Donations for the parish renovation will be deposited into this account.
- The Committee on Church Renovation is scheduled to meet again on May 12, 2002 at 11:30 AM after the PPC meeting.
3. General Assembly Resolution
Sr. Grace, S.Sp.S. spoke with Fr. Bel regarding our formation programs. Sr. Grace strongly urges us to push through with our programs and suggests having a Life in the Spirit Seminar in the parish.
4. Friends of St. Jude Website
Several members of the PPC noted that the website address and email address of the Friends of St. Jude group have a reference to St. Jude. Some were concerned that this may result in some confusion in distinguishing between the group and the parish. Bro. John Tanbonliong explained that the website made by the Friends of St. Jude is what one could call a 'fan site'. A fan site focuses on a subject of interest (in this case, our parish) but in an unofficial capacity. Bro. John also noted that although the website and email addresses have the word 'st_jude_thaddeusph' in them, the content of the website makes no claim that it is the official website of our parish.
Bro. William Limqueco suggested that if the PPC finds anything wrong about the website, the Friends of St. Jude can be requested to modify or remove whatever is in the website that may be deemed inappropriate. Bro. John was also asked to do a study on how the parish may go about acquiring a name for its official website and email address, should the parish decide to put one up in the future.
5. Mass at St. Jude Apartment
Fr. Pol reported to the body that he recently went to the nearby St. Jude Apartment to say Mass. Fr. Pol also noted that the residents of the apartment had organized the neighborhood for the said event. Catechism classes were being conducted and Fr. Pol was asked to bless the homes in the neighborhood.
6. Warning on Vatican 'Representatives' and Catholics for a Free Choice
The Archdiocese of Manila recently issued a warning on two visiting Italians who have been going around the archdiocese and claiming to be Vatican representatives. They are frauds and should be avoided.
The Archdiocese has also issued a warning on the group known as Catholics for a Free Choice. It is an organization based in the United States that advocates practices that are contrary to the Catholic faith such as abortion and artificial contraception. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has denounced this group and the local faithful is being cautioned, in case the group establishes a presence here in the future.
7. Letter from Bishop Soc Villegas
Fr. Pol read a letter from Bishop Soc Villegas entitled 'Stained But Beautiful'. In this letter, Bishop Soc speaks on behalf of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and addresses the issue of sexual misconduct within the Catholic clergy.
8. MFCPLA Quarterly Meeting
The MFCPLA will have its next quarterly meeting at St. Jude parish on May 28, 2002 at 7 PM. A light supper will be served. All interested PPC members are welcome to join.
