Parish Pastoral Council Meeting - 14 April 2002

1. Church Renovation

Ms. Rosalie Cheng showed to the PPC her updated designs for our church renovation. She showed drawings of the floorplan, sanctuary, baptistry, choir loft, confessional, and façade.

The altar, tabernacle, pulpit, and lectern will incorporate a lotus motif. Fr. Pol suggested having the lotus motif to give our church a unique Oriental characteristic. However, Sis. Jasmine Tan mentioned that the lotus is associated with Buddhism and having the lotus design in our church might be inappropriate. The Committee on Church Renovation will discuss whether having a lotus design in our church would be liturgically acceptable.

There will be two confessionals for the church. One will be the traditional confessional that we already have. The other will give the penitent the option of confessing to a priest either behind a screen or face-to-face.

The arch on the church's doorway will be removed. This is to make the doorway consistent with the rest of the proposed design for the church.

The final position of the crucifix has not yet been determined. Fr. Pol said that wherever the crucifix will eventually be placed, the sentiments of the parishoners will be taken into account.

2. National Shrine Status

Fr. Genaro Diwa of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission met with Fr. Pol, Ms. Rosalie Cheng, and Bro. Lawrence last April 9, 2002 to discuss the requirements for becoming a national shrine. The requirements are as follows:
  • The church must be taking care of pilgrims from all over the country for many years. Evidence of this would be the testimonies about the intercessory power of St. Jude.
  • There should be a paradigm celebration of the sacraments. The celebration of the Mass, homily, and choir should be of above-average quality.
  • Confession should be readily available at any time.
  • A pastoral plan should be in effect to help pilgrims, providing them with information about St. Jude and the Biblical foundation for the novena to St. Jude. This may be done, for example, with printed leaflets.
  • The church must be consecrated or dedicated.
  • The design of the church must be in accordance with the guidelines of Vatican II.
  • The church should promote Catholic culture, hold lectures thereon, and be an authority on St. Jude.
  • A written petition to be designated as national shrine should be signed by the parish priest with the written conformity of the parish pastoral council. This petition should be addressed and submitted to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) with a copy furnished to the Archbishop of Manila.
With regards to the 5th requirement, our church has been blessed but it has no record of ever being consecrated or dedicated.

Fr. Diwa also commented that our plan to place wide video screens outside the church is very liturgical and he encouraged us to implement it.

3. Friends of St. Jude

Fr. Pol reported that the Friends of St. Jude had its third meeting on April 4, 2002. The group's activities are being properly coordinated with the other parish organizations. In addition to the functions already mentioned at the last PPC meeting, the group also helps in ushering the devotees and keeping them from crowding the front of the church during the Novena Masses.

The group has suggested putting in the church one yellow box where devotees can place their petitions and one red box where they can put their thanksgiving notes. The group has also suggested having a record book where devotees can write their stories on how St. Jude has helped them. Others may read this record book for inspiration.

The group also has a website and email address. The website address is http://www.geocities.com/st_jude_thaddeusph and the email address is st_jude_thaddeusph@yahoo.com.

4. Parish Youth

The San Jose de Trozo Vicariate opened this year's sportsfest on April 7, 2002 with a motorcade from San Miguel Church to St. Mary's Parish. St. Jude Parish will be hosting the volleyball competition. Fr. Rikki is the overall coordinator for the sportsfest. This sportsfest is in preparation for the district's Festival of the Youth.

5. Flores de Maria

This year's Flores de Maria will start on May 2, 2002. The four parish barangays will host the Flores de Maria according to the following schedule:

1st week of May - Brgy. 637

2nd week of May - Brgy. 638

3rd week of May - Brgy. 640

4th week of May - Brgy. 639 (c/o Mother Butler Guild)

6. Social Services

There will be a job fair in San Roque Parish in Blumentritt on May 11, 2002 from 9 AM to 12 noon. Several companies will be at the job fair offering positions for factory workers and other blue-collar jobs. About 10 companies and 300 applicants are targeted for the job fair.

7. General Assembly Resolution

The PPC began discussing the results of the Parish General Assembly workshops conducted last January 13, 2002. The first goal of Integral Faith Formation was tackled. It was determined that formation should first target the members of the parish organizations. This way they can become effective in evangelizing others.

It was agreed that the parish should provide formation activities to the parish organizations. Talks or seminars could be given on the catechism, spirituality, and other topics of concern at least once a month in the parish. Members of the parish organizations would be required to attend a minimum number of these talks/seminars within a year. Even as parish-hosted formation activities are being planned, Fr. Pol encouraged all the parish organizations to continue with the formation activities that they each provide to their own members.

Sis. Mya Ocado was assigned to summarize the results of the discussion in a resolution format.

8. MFCPLA May Pilgrimage to Antipolo

The MFCPLA May pilgrimage to Antipolo will be on May 5, 2002. This year's pilgrimage will be hosted by Binondo Parish. A bus will depart from St. Jude at around 12 noon and is expected to arrive in Antipolo at 2 PM. The rosary will be prayed at 2:30 PM and a Mass will be celebrated at 3 PM. Those who would like to take the bus to Antipolo are required to register with the parish office. Priority will be given to the members of the parish organizations. The deadline for registration is on April 28, 2002. Sis. Paz Isip will be in charge of the bus.
