HR
When was the last time you read the Bible? (As in read it from cover to cover just like the best selling novel of today) Chances are your bible is somewhere in your bookshelf. From time to time you will get the chance to hear parts of the story in your Church as readings or as sermons. Some will have an impact, some won't. But generally the feeling is: "It's just another story I've heard before" that the message of the story has lost the essence of being new, of being good news. You probably will wonder why the apathy towards a book considered inspired by God and the Word of God. The bible should be read with the right attitude. Some would read it as if it were good guy defeats bad guy story but there is something much more profound than a moral story. In essence, the bible is the story about our relationship with God.
A Father Who Keeps His Promises written by Scott Hahn gives an exciting overview in reading the Bible in a different light. For a little background about Scott Hahn, he is a convert from Protestant and is one of the most articulate and promising theologians of our Catholic faith. He writes with a passion and clarity that even lay people can understand easily terms which only are reserved for theologians.
In this book, he provides a deeper insight into understanding the Scripture. Scripture is about the history of man's salvation and also of our own personal salvation. It is a story about God's unfailing love and His promise to us. Piece by piece, the puzzle of the story takes shape by exploring God's covenant love with specific characters in the Bible starting with the couple Adam and Eve and broadening the scope of covenant throughout time to include a household, a tribe, a nation, a race and eventually the coming of Christ to include into the covenant the Church.
There are two key words that are prominently mentioned in this book namely covenant and promise. They are differentiated and distinguished to properly give us the implications on the story that will unfold in the Scripture. They are emphasized in the retelling of the bible story to give us an idea of how God care for us by keeping His promises for our redemption even at the cost of sending His begotten son to die for our sins. Because of this, we have to realize that we are members of His covenant family.
Reading this book gives us a panoramic view of the divine love story and our personal involvement with God.
