21st FCCY National Convention
Unknown
April 1-5, 2001 marked the 21st National Convention of the Filipino-Chinese Catholic Youth. This memorable event was held at the Salesian Retreat Center, Dumaguete City, where more than 140 FCCYers from the different parts of the country gathered in the "City of Gentle People" to have fun, meet new friends and most importantly share faith experiences and God's blessings with one another. In the light of this year's theme, "Teacher, what good must I do?" (Mt 19:16-22), four thematic events highlighted the weeklong convention-family values, social consciousness, nature appreciation and media as tools for evangelization.
The enchanting Forest Camp was the main venue for activities centering on family values. In the morning, the delegates were asked to ponder on various family values and present their views on each situation through a skit. In the afternoon, they enjoyed playing outdoor games promoting unity and brotherhood. Towards the end of the day, most of the participants had a wonderful experience wall climbing, while others had fun swimming through the fresh and cool waters.
Film showing, spiritual talks and activities revolving on sensitivity and reaching out to the poor were conducted to instill social consciousness in the minds of each FCCY. This was further emphasized in the outreach held at Habitat for Humanity, where the participants helped the poor families build their very own houses in the area.
The delegates had the wonderful time of their lives in the city of Bais, where they cruised along the strait of Taņon and saw the whales and dolphins, wild and alive in their natural habitat. The activity allowed each of them to learn to be one with nature and appreciate it even more.
In the morning of the last day of the convention, there was a talk given by Fr. Arlo Yap, SVD on Effects of Media on the Youth of Today, and Media and Technology as Tools for Evangelization. This was followed by the youth pilgrimage--Stations of the Cross around the City of Dumaguete in the afternoon, which culminated in a mass held in Mary Immaculate Parish, presided by Bishop Teodoro Buhain, DD.
