Shrek
R5D2
Good day to all! I'm here to share with you some views regarding a few films I've watched. This will be a weekly thing so be prepared to check this column out regularly for some updates. Due to various points of view and tastes each one of us may have, please be reminded that the following comments are based only on what I felt about the film and you are entitled to your own opinion. However, I will be glad if you will be able to send me your comments or views regarding the films that are reviewed in this column. Without much ado, for this week, we shall be discussing this film:
I'd be honest and tell you that at first I really didn't like this film although there were indeed some moments that amused me. It's a story of an ogre named Shrek and how he embarked on a perilous journey with a Donkey to save Princess Fiona from a dragon and as a reward, Lord Farquaad will free Shrek's home from all the fairy tale characters he has banished there. But before the movie ends, secrets are laid bare as the characters learn more about themselves, each other and the true meaning of beauty. And believe me, nothing is what is seems to be.
The characters are lovable and amusing especially upon seeing a lot of our favorite fairy tale characters from Snow White to Pinocchio, and how they spoofed some Disney films and current hits (e.g. Matrix). The voices as provided for by Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow, are excellent for their respective parts.
Aside from the timeless theme of finding the true meaning of beauty, we also find the problem concerning the tendency of people to prejudge others. Well, it's not really funny to laugh at the appearance of others but sometimes, movies present situations that are funny and you can't help but burst out laughing (e.g. Farquaad's height). We just have to bear in mind that movies are just for entertainment and they shouldn't be imitated in real life.
All in all, Shrek is a fun movie that makes us forget what age we are and allows us a few moments to relish the joys of being a child. As in all fairy tales, this ends in the usual "and they lived happily ever after" note and we certainly hope that we do too.
